How Cremation Glass Memorials Are Made

At David Contreras Glass, each cremation glass memorial is individually handcrafted with care, respect, and artistic precision. A small portion of cremated remains is incorporated into molten glass, creating a luminous heirloom that honors the memory of your loved one.

Every piece is created by hand in the flame by glass artist David Contreras, ensuring that no two memorials are ever exactly alike.

Step 1: Placing Your Order

Families may place an order directly through our website or through one of our funeral home partners. Once your order is confirmed, you will receive clear instructions for sending a small portion of cremated remains to our studio. Only a very small amount of ashes is required to create a memorial piece.

Step 2: Sending the Ashes

Ashes are securely packaged and mailed to our studio using the instructions provided after purchase. Each order is carefully logged and labeled upon arrival to ensure the highest level of care and accuracy throughout the entire process.

We treat every memorial with the respect and attention it deserves.

Step 3: Creating the Memorial Glass

Using traditional glassblowing techniques, the ashes are gently incorporated into molten glass during the creation of the memorial piece. Precious metals such as fine silver and gold may also be added to create depth, movement, and luminous color within the glass.

The result is a beautiful piece of memorial art where the ashes become part of the glass itself.

Step 4: Cooling and Finishing

Once the piece is formed, it is slowly cooled through a process called annealing. This controlled cooling process strengthens the glass and ensures the durability of the finished memorial.

Each piece is then carefully inspected and prepared for delivery.

Step 5: Returning Your Memorial

Your completed memorial glass piece is securely packaged and returned to you once it is finished.

Any remaining cremated remains will be handled according to your preference. They may be respectfully scattered by our studio or returned to you upon request with an additional shipping fee. Remaining cremains are held securely for up to 90 days.

In most cases, your completed memorial piece will be delivered before any remaining ashes are returned. This allows families the opportunity to order additional memorial pieces without needing to send another cremation shipment.

A One-of-a-Kind Memorial

Because each piece is handmade, no two memorials will ever be exactly the same. Subtle variations in color, form, and light make every creation as unique as the life it represents.

Creating these memorials is both an artistic process and a deeply meaningful responsibility that we are honored to provide for families.
