Carrying Dreams Forward: The Story of the Traveling Turtles
One of the most beautiful parts of creating memorial art is witnessing the incredible ways families choose to honor the people they love.
Every family grieves differently.
Every family remembers differently.
And sometimes, a family's vision becomes something so meaningful that it inspires everyone fortunate enough to be part of the journey.
The Traveling Turtles is one of those stories.
It began with a daughter named Andrea and her father, Ron.
After Ron passed away in October of 2025 following a battle with prostate cancer, Andrea found herself facing a question many families hear almost immediately after the loss of a loved one:
"When will you be having the funeral?"
The answer wasn't simple.
Ron never really wanted a traditional funeral, and Andrea knew that standing in front of a room filled with people, trying to summarize an extraordinary life through tears, wasn't what either of them would have wanted.
But there was something even more important weighing on her heart.
She didn't want people to leave a service and slowly let his memory fade.
She wanted his story to continue.
She wanted people who had never met him to know the kind of man he was.
A man who always had a smile on his face.
A man who could make people laugh.
A man who was endlessly creative, endlessly generous, and always willing to help others.
A man who believed in taking the high road and treating people with kindness.
A man who was always ready for an adventure.
Most of all, she wanted his legacy to remain active, living and growing through the people whose lives he touched.
Years before his passing, Andrea and Ron attended therapy together as they navigated his illness. During one session, they were asked to think of something that could serve as a sign that his spirit was visiting after he was gone.
Without hesitation, they both had the same answer.
A turtle.
As Ron's final days approached, Andrea sat beside him and a vision began to form.
Her father had always dreamed of traveling.
Like many retirees, he had a list of places he hoped to explore and adventures he hoped to experience. But only about a month after finally retiring, he was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer.
The adventures he had planned would never happen the way he imagined.
Or so it seemed.
Andrea decided that if her father couldn't continue traveling himself, perhaps his story could.
Together, we created a collection of memorial sea turtles containing a small portion of Ron's cremated remains.
The plan was simple.
Family and friends would take a turtle with them on their journeys.
Photographs would be taken.
Stories would be shared.
New memories would be created.
And along the way, people would talk about Ron.
They would tell stories about him.
They would introduce him to people who had never met him.
They would carry his legacy into places he had always dreamed of seeing.
What happened next exceeded anything any of us could have imagined.
The turtles began traveling.
Antarctica.
Bali.
New York City.
The Florida Keys.
Dallas.
Spain.
Colorado.
Bangkok.
The Caribbean.
Rwanda.
The Congo.
And countless other destinations.
With every photograph, Ron's story continued.
With every adventure, new people learned who he was.
With every mile traveled, his legacy expanded far beyond what a traditional memorial could have accomplished.
What makes the Traveling Turtles so inspiring isn't simply where they have gone.
It's why they are going.
They remind us that love doesn't end when someone dies.
The dreams of the people we love don't have to disappear with them.
Sometimes we become the ones who carry those dreams forward.
Sometimes the greatest tribute we can offer is continuing the journey they started.
Following the Traveling Turtles has reminded us of something we often forget.
Life is not measured only by destinations.
It is measured by the people we meet, the memories we create, the kindness we share, and the adventures we embrace along the way.
As Ron often believed, it isn't really the destination that matters.
It's the journey.
And what a remarkable journey it continues to be.
We are deeply honored that Andrea trusted us to help bring her vision to life and grateful to witness Ron's story continuing to inspire people around the world.
If you'd like to follow the ongoing adventures of the Traveling Turtles and learn more about Ron's incredible story, we encourage you to visit the project and see where his journey has taken him next.
Because some memorials sit quietly on a shelf.
Others travel the world. 🤍 ✨
